Sharing the Road with a Cyclist

General Statute Chapter 20 on Motor Vehicles covers the laws of operating a bicycle on North Carolina public roads. Bicycles are considered vehicles and their riders the driver of that vehicle. Bicycles are NOT considered MOTOR VEHICLES because they are not self propelled. Cyclists are expected to obey the same traffic laws that motorists must abide where applicable.

That’s the law. If you’ve spent anytime operating a vehicle on public roads you’ll know that cyclists aren’t always the best about adhering to that law and motorists aren’t the best about recognizing those rights.
